Just as for so many people, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced Intellectual Property (IP) professionals to change the way they work. Remote working has become the norm as lockdowns have forced the closure of offices, factories and university campuses. However, research for this year's edition of the IP Trend Monitor study – conducted by Dennemeyer and CTC Legal Media – suggests that effectively communicating and managing workloads while away from colleagues is likely to be a continuing struggle for some time. Remote working is set to stay
Nearly 100 participants responded to 2020's IP Trend Monitor survey, representing a wide range of organizations from all over the world working in the IP sector. More than three-quarters of them (78%) say they are now working at least 50% or even 100% remotely, and just 6% are still working entirely at the office.
Crucially, when asked about the future, more than two-thirds of respondents predicted they would have fewer face-to-face meetings, do less business travel and work more from home. These views also reflect the safe assumption that hearings, events and meetings will take place remotely in the coming period. For example, at the European Patent Office (EPO), oral hearings will be held by video conference as standard until at least September 2021. Meanwhile, major event organizers such as the International Trademark Association (INTA) plan to host meetings virtually or in a hybrid form until the end of this year at the earliest.
In addition, governments will likely continue to restrict travel, including commuting, until the threat from the virus has been mitigated. Therefore, clients will expect remote meetings, while many IP professionals will have to remain working from home either on a full-time basis or part-time as employers implement social distancing measures in workplaces.
